Just in time for Thanksgiving, it's the Eat Smart Month, and initiative from the American Heart Association.

We have some great tips on how to make healthier choices along with some other good advice on living a healthier life from Dr. Hatham Dib, Cardiologist and Heart Failure Specialist from Atlantic Cardiology.

He talks with me on Living Well with Robin Stoloff. Here are a few ways to get started:

    Add Color To Your Plate

    Choose at least one vegetable from each of five color groups to get a wide range of healthy nutrients. Consuming more fruits and vegetables is key!

    Quit Smoking

    Quitting smoking overall will improve your health. There are many local programs to help you quit. It is one of the biggest step you can take to  live a longer, healthier life. Check out  NJ Quitline.

    Stay Active

    Many of us spend the majority of the day sitting down. Make sure to take breaks in between the day to walk, get up, and get active. Make time to get active during the day even if it's simply walking the dog. Aim for 20-30 minutes per day most days of the week for at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week.

    Avoid Processed Food

    Making healthier decisions like avoiding processed foods. Most of the sodium we consume comes from processed, prepackaged, and even restaurant foods, not the salt shaker.  Read labels and be more aware of what is going into you body.
