Plastic surgeons have seen an increased demand for their services since the pandemic began. One reason - everyone is looking at themselves far too closely and way too long in Zoom meetings.

If you are not ready to go the plastic surgery route, you can do a lot to improve your skin. If you’ve read our Anti-Aging Tips Your Skin Will Thank You For, you should be familiar with a skincare routine that leaves your skin feeling plumper, younger and fresh. Who doesn’t want that? Now that we have the basics down, we can focus on a key ingredient known for its anti-aging properties. Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that can help the skin appear brighter and unclog pores.

Topical vitamin A-based drugs called retinoids are the most used and most studied anti-aging compounds. Products containing retinol can address issues of mature skin such as dullness, fine lines, and wrinkles, and even skin color. The American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) suggests using retinol products in your nighttime skincare routine.  Applying eye creams or moisturizers containing retinol at night will allow the product to sink into the skin and improve skin texture over time.

We have all seen the commercials for over-the-counter retinol creams, but let’s face it, that is probably not the only thing Nicole Kidman has done to keep her looking so youthful.  Prescription retinol, also known as Retin-A or the generic Tretinoin is more potent but is not as gentle on the skin as non-prescription. While prescription retinoids are pricier, they are considered by many to be the gold-standard in skincare.

Retinol may irritate the skin depending on the dosage in products, causing dryness and sensitivity to the sun. It is best to introduce retinol products slowly to your skincare routine to prevent irritation. Start by using retinol creams every other day to prevent irritation, working your way up to daily use. Always remember to apply sunscreen to the skin every day after moisturizer to protect the skin from the sun.Talk with your dermatologist about the best skincare regimen for you and start looking a little fresher in your next Zoom meeting.
