How to Handle a Negative Nelly or Ned
We all know that person who looks at the glass half empty, complains about everything, and just brings down the mood. Let’s face it, these have not been easy times and it can be challenging for even the most upbeat person to stay positive, but there are some people who just cannot see the good side of anything. There is always one person who feels the need to express the trials and tribulations that life has brought upon them. They could be a co-worker, friend, or even a family member. While it is good to share our thoughts and feelings with others, there is a time and place for that. A fun evening out or a work Zoom meeting may not be the time to air your grievances.
So how do we handle someone like that? First, try to put yourself in their shoes. When we hear them complain, try not to judge or assume the worst in them, you may not know what is going on behind the scenes in their life. Oftentimes, these are good people having a hard time. Also, try to take the high road and resist the urge to chime in with the complaint. Help the person who is a downer feel better about themselves. Describe for them a highlight reel of the positive things they have accomplished to help make them feel more positive. Another option is to change the subject to something lighter to create a happier and more jovial mood.
This has been a tough and strange year for all of us and it is normal to feel down from time to time, but when negativity takes a hold of your or someone you know, it can be tough to overcome. If you suspect someone is suffering from depression, talk to him or her privately, and suggest getting help. The first step is recognizing that there is a problem. However, if someone is simply just a Negative Nelly or Ned, we can do what we can to help them see the positive side of life by being positive ourselves. Ultimately, we are all responsible for our own words, thoughts, and actions.
