Deadly Blue Holes in South Jersey
I posted this last summer, but it is a good reminder of how dangerous a blue hole can be. Please share this on your social media and hopefully you might save someone from getting hurt.
"Blue Holes" are all over the Pine Barrens as well as other parts of South Jersey and they can be deadly if you try to swim in them.
Most of these man made reservoirs are privately owned rock quarries that have unstable, sandy bottoms that can collapse if you try to walk on it.
There are also steep drop-offs that can catch swimmers off guard. The water can go from just a few feet deep, to a hundred feet deep, in just a few steps.
In addition to the extreme drop comes very cold water that can be 30 to 40 degrees colder (or more) than the surface water, which can cause rapid cramping in muscles, that can drag a swimmer to the bottom.
