With  the turkey about to take the spotlight on this holiday season, The Playlist this week salutes all of Tom's feathered friends.  Remember not everyone is going for the turkey on Thanksgiving - some smaller gatherings may choose a chicken or even a Cornish game hen, some may feel the duck, maybe a turkey confit (turkey in duck fat - saw this in Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives with George's Place in Cape May, NJ), and of course there is the Turducken (chicken, duck and turkey all rolled and stuffed together.

I can tell you that finding songs about turkeys, ducks or chickens was not easy, and I'm not about to put The Disco Duck into The Playlist (sorry Rick Dees).  There was a band called Jimmie's Chicken Shack from the 90s, but they did not make the cut either.

The obvious selection of the 60s group The Byrds were passed on as well. The fact is most of the birds this week range from the generic, to the shore birds, to those of peace, to the pet at home, and a group of corn thieves.

Remember that "The Playlist" is a view into the best 20 or songs set around a weekly theme for your iPod.  Feel free to add to it, disagree with my choices, or share your ideas for a theme for a future Playlist.

In salute to the inspiration of "The Playlist", we start with Adam Sandler and The Thanksgiving Song - you know you "Love to eat turkey"!  Here is the rest of the birds in their natural habitat:

The Beatles - Free As A Bird (Lennon vocals in '77, recorded with the remaining 3 in '95, Grammy win in '97)

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird (admit it - you yelled that song out at your favorite cover band at least once in your life)

Seal - Fly Like An Eagle (great cover of the Steve Miller classic)

Silver Conventions - Fly Robin Fly (it was either this or The Disco Duck to represent that era)

Bob Marley - 3 Little Birds (what 3 they are is not known to me)

Nelly Furtado - I'm Like A Bird (as she says "I don't know where her home is")

They Might Be Giants - Birdhouse In Your Soul (maybe this is your home Nelly)

James Taylor and Carly Simon - Mockingbird (makes a nice pet if the bird sings)

A Flock of Seagulls - I Ran (yes Seagulls can run, especially if they are after food)

Sarah McLachlan - Blackbird (not many great Beatles covers - this qualifies!)

Morris Day and The Time - The Bird (dance craze from Purple Rain, and yes they tried to fly like birds)

Icicle Works - Birds Fly (you may it know it by it's subtitle Whisper To A Scream from the 80s)

Owl City - Fireflies (this is about the Owl, not the Firefly)

Eric Clapton - Tears In Heaven (a former Yardbird who took flight in salute to his 4 yr. old son)

Prince - When Doves Cry (a sad sound - see Clapton)

Counting Crows - Hanginaround (you'll see a group of Crows hanging here)

Black Crowes - Jealous Again (you're jealous you did not think of this one)

Stone Temple Pilots - Big Empty (main theme song from the '94 flick "The Crow")

Sheryl Crow - If It Makes You Happy (I think we've hit out limit on Crows)

The Eagles - Take It To The Limit (we have done just that)

Until next Monday, enjoy this eclectic mix of music tied to one theme - that is what "The Playlist" is all about!
