Two Lower Twp Cops Caught on Video Stealing Bikes in Cape May
This one is a little hard to figure out. Why would two cops from the Lower Twp Police Department steal two bikes right out in the open, with surveillance cameras everywhere, from a bike rack in Cape May?
In a press release on Tuesday, that's what the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office says happened. The Prosecutor announced the arrest of Eric Campbell, 28, and Austin Craig, 28, both of Lower Township, for theft on Tuesday.
These arrests were the result of an investigation initiated by the Cape May Police Department on October 8 regarding the theft of two bicycles from the area of Decatur Street in Cape May City.
During the initial investigation, video surveillance was obtained depicting two males removing the bicycles and leaving the area.
According to the investigation, these suspects were identified as Eric Campbell and Austin Craig, who are both employed as police officers with the Lower Township Police Department.
The Press of Atlantic City reports that Craig had been hired by the Lower Township Police Department in April 2019, according to Donald Vanaman, administrative captain for the department, and Campbell was hired as a part-time Class II officer in 2016 and promoted toa a full-time officer in January 2019.
As a result of additional investigation, Campbell and Craig were both issued a summons for theft, a crime of the fourth degree.
