New study reports that people who give up cigarettes all at once are more successful than those who give it up gradually.

CBS Philly reports, researchers found that smokers who quit abruptly or "cold turkey" didn't return to the habit. In the English study the two groups were given the option to quit at once, OR choose a quit day and gradually reduce their amount of smoking.

Both groups received nicotine patches and other aids to help them on their quit day. In addition, they also received patches post quit-day along with therapy.

Researchers noticed those who quit cold turkey did not regress back to their smoking habits.

Lindson-Hawley, lead author of this study in the Annals of Internal Medicine, thinks healthcare workers should offer the option to quit abruptly before the gradual option.

Another takeaway from this research is that people need the support and motivation in order for them to stop smoking completely. If you're not ready, or don't believe in yourself the method will not work.

Regardless of the method, find the motivation and support needed to help you or your loved one quit.
