Scott Barr, a retired Ship Bottom cop, was passing through Absecon, at mile marker 39 of the Garden State Parkway, on Saturday, Oct 12, when he stopped to help as the scene of an accident.

Friends and former co-workers of the longtime police sergeant weren't surprised when they heard that Scott went out of his way to help others in trouble. There are many stories of Scott's noble efforts when he was on the police force, like the time during superstorm Sandy when he rescued a woman trapped in her stalled vehicle that was filling up quickly with water. He pulled the woman out of her car and took her to the hospital, where she was treated for hypothermia.

This time, though, it was Scott Barr who ran in to trouble. As Barr helped with the accident on the shoulder, a passing vehicle struck and severely injured him.

The retired officer is in the Atlantic City Regional Trauma Center's Critical Care Unit, according to a GoFundMe for his family. He is undergoing multiple procedures and surgeries.

"The Barr's are an extremely loved and involved family in the local community," the online fundraiser says. "We are starting this GoFundMe page in an effort to assist the family that has given so much to everyone around them."

The Go Fund Me has raised over $31.000 of the $50000 goal as of Monday morning.

A benefit for the Barr family is also planned for 2 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Manahawkin Elks Lodge, 520 Hilliard Blvd. Tickets are $50 each.
