If your New Years Resolution for 2016 is to lose weight, drinking tequila may be the way to go according to a new study.

Drinking alcohol is notoriously packed with calories, but this study found a link between tequila and weight loss. The American Chemical Society discovered that sugar, agave, found in the plant that makes tequila can help lower your blood sugar. Agave is non-digestible so it does not raise your blood sugar.

Researchers studied this using mice, who drank water with agavins, and ended up eating less and had lower blood sugar levels. The mice also produced a hormone called GLP-1 while eating agavins, that kept their stomachs full longer.

So maybe for NYE, you'll want to do some tequila shots ...with caution!
