Dolphin Tail Washes Ashore in South Jersey
One day after a partially devoured dolphin washed ashore in South Jersey, we're finding out that an apparent dolphin tail washed up nearby as well.
It's not clear if the tail belongs to the body, but it does seem likely since both dolphin body parts were discovered in the same area and just a few hours apart.
According to an article from NBC 10, beach-goer Alicia Anderer found the severed tail while walking with her kids on the North Wildwood beach between 1st and 2nd Streets on Saturday.
While a shark expert we spoke with yesterday says he would guess a great white is responsible, based on the bite marks, others aren't so sure. Bob Schoelkopf, founding director of The Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine, says it may have been a sand tiger shark. Either way, most experts agree that the dolphin was likely dead before a shark starting feeding on it.
