Tragedy occurred this week at a Burlington County, New Jersey day camp after a young boy reportedly drowned to death.

The heartbreaking incident happened Monday around 2 p.m., according to Patch.com.

The drowning took place in the Bordentown, Mansfield Township section of Burlington County, NJ. The victim was just six years old.

It was reportedly the first day of summer camp for child at Liberty Lake Day Camp.

According to Liberty Lake, the boy 'became unresponsive during a swim period for the Freshman Division, which includes children entering first and second grade.'

He was pulled from the pool by a lifeguard who, along with camp stay, tried to perform lifesaving measures but they were unsuccessful. The child reportedly died a short time later after being treated at Virtua Hospital in Mount Holly.

The drowning of the boy is under investigation by Mansfield Twp. police and the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office, and an autopsy will be performed, Patch.com reports.

In a statement to members of the camp, founder and director Andy Pritikin conveyed his sadness and extended condolences to the child's family, saying, "We are absolutely devastated and heartbroken. Our thoughts at this most difficult time are with our camper's family, friends and loved ones — and we are respecting their privacy at this time."
