Roughly 30 residents of one apartment complex in Atlantic City are in line to receive a 25 percent rent rebate due to a poor management situation.

A judge intervened on behalf of more than two dozen renters of the Stanley S. Holmes Village, many of whom have reportedly been dealing with heat and hot water issues for over a year, according to Press of Atlantic City.

A lawsuit also accused Atlantic City Housing Authority of not addressing gas leaks and a number of other health code violations such moldy conditions and burst water pipes.

Stanley Village, located on Adriatic Avenue in Atlantic City, consists of more than 400 units. Many of its tenants have reportedly resorted to cooking food in microwaves and heating rooms with space heaters. Not a good situation in the winter.

Not only did Superior Court Judge John C. Porto award the abatement, which will roll back to rent paid by the affected tenants since November 2022, he leveled harsh words against A.C. Housing Authority over their neglect. Judge Porto said he's disappointed that the ACHA didn't step up on its own to right a wrong and take responsibility early on.

Porto likened the ACHA to a 'governmental entity taking a classic litigation response against human beings they are supposed to be providing habitable conditions to'.

Although it's a step in the right direction, the lawsuit had sought to compensate residents individually, but an agreement regarding that kind of settlement could not be reached, Press of A.C. reports.
