And the Garden State is not alone. Reportedly, the grocery chain has 32 stores going out of business by the end of 2024.
I miss Stop and Shop. They've become a unicorn in South Jersey over the years, but I used to be hopelessly devoted to the one on Berlin-Cross Keys Road in Sicklerville before it became a ShopRite.
Why is Stop and Shop Closing So Many Stores?
Stop and Shop tried to put a positive spin on the grim news, saying the upcoming closures will actually help the chain become more fiscally sound and put it in a better position moving forward. In a statement, the company's president Gordon Reid wrote, "Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand."
Employees of the New Jersey Stop & Shops that are closing have reportedly been offered the opportunity to be relocated to other stores.
