In Minnesota, the drinking age may be lowered from 21-years-old to 18-years-old now making it easier for young people to obtain alcohol. But, this may be for their benefit.

Veteran Minnesota State Representative, Phyllis Khan, has spent a large portion of her political career attempting to lower the drinking age. Although prior bills were met with large opposition, finally two may actually be breaking through.

The two pending bills are allowing young people under 21 to drink in certain situations. Here are the two possible bills:

  1. Those who are 18 and older are able to drink at bars and restaurants, but are still unable to purchase alcohol at a liquor store.
  2. 18-year-olds are able to drink at bars and restaurants with a parent or guardian over the age of 21 present.

This method is though to hopefully reduce binge drinking and the use of fake IDs among young adults. Their hope is that by allowing 18-year-olds to drink in bars and restaurants it will assist in teaching them to drink socially instead of excess.

If Minnesota is successful, the state would become the prime example to lower the drinking age.
