A six-year old boy is in serious condition after taking a bullet to the head when he was shot by a neighbor.

The incident took place Monday evening in Toms River.  The shooter was a four-year old neighbor who had gotten hold of a .22 calibur rifle, reports NJ1015.com.  The children were in a yard playing when the four year old went inside his house and returned with the weapon.

Toms River Police Chief Mike Mastronardy said at a press conference this morning the boys were reportedly 15 yards apart when the shot was fired. Mastronardy stated both boy's parents were “nearby” for the incident.  A call was place to 9-1-1 approximately 7 p.m. by the four-year-old’s mother.

Not many other details about the shooting were revealed by the Ocean County Prosecutor, including where the gun was located in the home, or whether it was an intentional or accidental event.
