A New Jersey couple perished after a tornado touched down last night where they were camping, injuring their three young children and dozens others.

Lord Balatbat and Lolabeth Ortega of Jersey City, New Jersey were killed Thursday following a confirmed tornado-touchdown approximately 9 p.m. where they were camping along the Chesapeake Bay on Virginia's Eastern Shore.

More than 1,300 people were at popular Cherrystone Family Camping and RV Resort, a 300-acre playground of swimming pools, mini-golf, pier fishing, crabbing and other activities when the twister tore through.

The couple's three children had to be hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, 6abc.com reports.

The couple, both born in the Philippines, had been married 14 years.

According to eyewitness reports, heavy rain and wind preceded a pitch black sky turned dark before the tornado's arrival at the campground, ripping awnings from trailers and flipping RVs on their sides.
