The 113th Annual NAACP National Convention is coming to Atlantic City this upcoming July 14-20, 2022.

It is an incredibly high-profile, prestigious, and national-caliber event.

On the occasion of his 2nd inauguration, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy approved legislation that will provide $2 million in funding for this important event.

Let’s take this opportunity to compare the difference between a good “investment” versus a “bad” one.

In February 2016, the state of New Jersey approved $11.9 million to keep The Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City.

Beyond the nostalgia of Miss America having been founded in Atlantic City and it continued to be staged in Atlantic City for more than 100 years, it delivered no tangible or quantifiable economic benefit whatsoever. Yet, it was a major annual expense in the many millions of dollars.

The upcoming NAACP National Convention will generate in the neighborhood of 12,000 delegates and deliver $7 million in direct economic benefit for Atlantic City.

This makes Governor Murphy’s $2 million pledge a good investment, which will yield a healthy return. Not to mention the national exposure that this convention will generate for Atlantic City and New Jersey.

The New Jersey Casino Reinvestment Development Authority will cover additional NAACP convention expenses, bringing the overall investment to approximately $3 million, a defendable, good investment all the way around.

MEET AC is managing this prestigious event, along with the many activities and events, which will once again give Atlantic City the opportunity to shine and demonstrate that they can successfully manage a national mega event of this caliber.

Also, the Atlantic City Convention Center will shine, as the state of New Jersey’s largest convention center.

It should be noted that the NAACP national convention is usually held in much larger cities than Atlantic City. For example, it has been hosted by major cities: San Antonio, Baltimore, Cincinnati and Philadelphia over the past several years.

Atlantic City has a population of only 40,000 residents, making the accomplishment of earning this major piece of business all the more impressive.

This is a big part of what promises to be a very busy summer season for Atlantic City and MEET AC, which will have one of its busiest summers in its rich history.
