Atlantic County public health and mosquito control officials have confirmed they have found the virus that's responsible for West Nile encephalitis in Somers Point. 

The Press of Atlantic City reports, the virus was discovered in mosquitoes at  the Lawrence “Bud” Kern Field which is located at New Hampshire and 7th Street. This is the first positive test for Somers Point. Health officials are monitoring the field to determine if spraying will be needed.

Positive testings in mosquitoes has already been confirmed in Northfield, Ventnor and Hammonton. Sprays have taken place in  Hammonton, Ventnor, Margate, Linwood and Northfield.

Health officials encourage residents to prevent the spread of West Nile Virus by following these simple steps:

Avoid mosquito bites by using an insect repellent whenever going outdoors.

Rid properties of mosquito breeding grounds by draining standing water.

Clean clogged gutters; check and repair screen doors.

Report dead birds to the Atlantic County Division of Public Health by calling 609-645-5971.
