The Miss America Organization has announced they are dropping the swimsuit competition from its annual competition, saying they will no longer judge contestants on their appearance.

Gretchen Carlson, who is head of the organization's board of trustees, made the announcement on ABC's Good Morning America Tuesday morning. Carlson said, "We're not going to judge you on your appearance because we are interested in what makes you you." Carlson went on to say that the organization will focus more on being a scholarship provider. Beyond that, Carlson also commented that they will make changes to the evening wear portion of the competition, too.

Carlson said she is not concerned that the show's television ratings will go down with the elimination of the swimsuit competition because viewers seem to be more interested in the talent portion of the show.

Viewers will notice the changes in just a few months when the competition hits ABC on September 9th, live from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
