Illegal Baby Names Across The Country And In New Jersey
There are laws for just about everything, including naming your baby. You can get creative, but there are boundaries. Laws vary from state to state, and New Jersey’s rules are some of the most strict.
Did you know that in Florida if you don’t pick a baby name within a certain period of time the state picks one for you? It’s true! Better do your picking up front.
In Mississippi, if you are married at the time of birth your baby automatically has your husband’s last name. So if you were planning that divorce and you want your baby to have your last name you better get that done before the big day.
In Oregon, you are allowed to name your baby a symbol if you want to. Same with Hawaii which could make things interesting when the teacher has to call on you in class.
In South Carolina, you could name your kid after P!nk if you wanted to since symbols are allowed there.
In Texas, you can name your baby Michael John III but not Michael John 3rd.
In New York, they say it is illegal for a baby’s first or middle name to be more than 30 characters long and the last name cannot be more than 40 characters long. You are also not allowed to have a number or symbol as any of your names. This may only be a problem if you were a Prince fan.
In New Jersey, we’re banned from naming our child an obscenity which is a good thing. We also have a limit of 30 characters or less for the first, middle or last name. You cannot name your baby “baby girl”, “baby boy”, “male”, “female” or a symbol, number or special character. In other words we aren’t putting up with the BS. Name your kids something nice will ya?
