Law enforcement officials are warning New Jersey residents of a phone scam seeking money for missed jury duty.

Glassboro Police Department in a Facebook post, warn residents after receiving a notice from the FBI Philadelphia Division and U.S. Marshals Service, District of NJ.

In this phone scam, the caller impersonates law enforcement and court officials to obtain fines from those who "missed jury duty."

This is how it would go down...

The caller will identify themselves as being part of the U.S. Marshals or as officers of county sheriff's departments. They'll inform the victim they didn't appear for their federal/local jury duty.

As if protocol, they'll say there's a warrant for their arrest and they must pay a fine then report to court. The caller requests the victim purchase a prepaid debit card in order to pay the fine before appearing in court. Immediate red flag!

Prepaid?! No chance in hell. But law-abiding citizens will fall victim to these easily, because as much as some would like to skip jury duty - no one wants to go to jail for it.

If you believe you have fallen victim to this phone scam, you can file a complain with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.IC3.gov.

A friendly reminder once again to never send money over the phone, especially without identification or if the person is the one reaching out.
