A New Jersey atheist group filed a federal lawsuit to stop the annual blessing of animals at Bergen County Animal Shelter.

American Atheist Inc were NOT happy over Bergen County Animal Shelter's annual blessing during an event held to honor Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.

According to the group, the event involving blessing by Roman Catholic priest is a violation of the First and Fourth Amendments. The lawsuit also states the shelter is promoting religious ceremonies by holding it on government property.

See photos from the event described as a "very moving and memorable moment" for those involved:

President of American Atheists, David Silverman, said this in a statement:

"When I walk into a government building to use government services, the government should be absolutely neutral on religious matters. Allowing a Franciscan friar to conduct religious services with staff is the antithesis of neutrality."

What do you think? Do they make valid points here? Read the full story on NJ.com.
