South Jersey is finally experiencing the winter. But, we aren't the only ones going through it! Our furry friends need some help staying warm too.

CBS Philly caught up with Dr. Jeffrey, the head veterinarian at the SCPA's Wellness Clinic for tips on how to keep our pets warm against this cold weather. Personally, and quite stupidly I'll admit, I always thought a coat was enough to keep my dog nice and dry during these weather conditions.

Here are some useful tips I just learned:

  • 1

    Stick to Short Leashes!

A shorter leash gives you greater control of your dog. Just imagine how far they can get with a long or retractable leash. The shorter the leash the better hold.

  • 2

    Beware of De-Icing Products

My puppy Drake, eats EVERYTHING he comes across in the street. De-Icing products are toxic to your pet, so just keep an eye out.

  • 3

    Pay Attention to Signs

Sometimes we don't realize exactly how cold our little one is, watch out for signs if they're tired or even cold.

  • 4

    Keep Them Hydrated!

Dr. Jeffrey suggests to ensure that your pet has enough to drink at all times. And I agree, my childhood dog used to get really lethargic if he didn't have any water in his system.

    Invest in Some Booties

Okay, this is a tip I have heard before. And, I'll admit I was quick to judge those pets that would wear booties. But they do serve a purpose other than 'looking cute.' Turns out booties are really great to help protect your pet from salt on the ground.

And safepaw.com gives some added info that the salt burns through their paws causing ulcers, and even bacterial infections...yikes.
