Rare Condition Makes People Become ‘Drunk’ Without Drinking

There was a strange case of a woman who was arrested for DWI without drinking, but now it has raised awareness to a syndrome that causes people to become "drunk."

This rare-condition called "Auto-Brewery" syndrome causes the digestive system to become its own tiny brewery. It was brought to light after a woman in upstate NY was arrested for a DWI and explained that she actually suffered from this syndrome.

What is it exactly? Auto-brewery syndrome, also known as gut fermentation syndrome, causes substances in the gut to ferment food into ethanol, causing someone's blood-alcohol level to spike. So, in other words, food is turned into alcohol. While it sounds to be unbelievable doctors have found this rare condition on multiple occasions. When a person's blood-alcohol level increases, they suffer the same results as a person that has consumed alcohol.
