An Air Quality Alert has been issued for central and south Jersey counties including Monmouth, Ocean, Salem, Gloucester, Camden, Burlington, Cumberland, Atlantic and Cape May counties  as the hot air may be unhealthy for children, people with asthma, heart disease and the elderly.

An Excessive Heat Advisory is in effect for Mercer, Gloucester, Camden and Burlington counties but the entire state faces temperatures in the 90s which combined with the humidity will create a heat index of 105 to 115 degrees. The highest heat of the day is expected between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.

The worse of the heat wave comes tomorrow when humidity levels will increase tomorrow as the high pressure area responsible for the heat wave will begin to weaken.

Trenton and Newark reached high temperatures of 95. According to WeatherUnderground.com, the high reached 93 in Farmingdale, 91 in Morristown, 93 in Atlantic City and 96 in Woodbridge.

Two fronts will move through the area Saturday with the second one getting ‘hung up” to our south. Heavy showers and thunderstorms will form during the day on Saturday continuing into the evening. Sunday will be “cooler” with high temperatures in the upper 80s with less humidity and the threat of thunderstorms.

National Weather Service Heat Safety Tips

  • Slow down and reduce strenuous activities. Reschedule strenuous work for early morning or evening.
  • Wear lightweight and light-colored clothing to reflect heat and sunlight.
  • Drink plenty of water and nonalcoholic and non-carbonated beverages.
  • Spend more time in air conditioned places.
  • Avoid protein rich meals such as meats that increase metabolic heat production and increase water loss.
  • Never leave children, disabled adults or pets in parked cars — beat the heat, check the back seats.
