Battleship New Jersey Leaving Camden Waterfront and You Can Watch
The Navy's most-decorated battleship, Battleship New Jersey, is being moved for the first time in almost 23 years. You can watch as it cruises away from Camden Waterfront. Here's how.
I LOVE the Battleship NJ. I learn something new about it every time I visit. That's me and my dad in the photo above.
Why is Battleship New Jersey in Camden Being Moved?
Why is Battleship NJ leaving its current home along Camden Waterfront and where is it going?
In order to preserve the vessel, the time has come for Battleship New Jersey to undergo some repairs and get a fresh coat of paint. The restoration of Battleship New Jersey is expected to take around two months to complete. It'll likely return to Camden Waterfront by Memorial Day Weekend.
Marshall Spevak, of Cherry Hill, who is reportedly overseeing the battleship's maintenance, says the project is long overdue and the longer it gets delayed, the more expensive it will be.
The ship's mast and radar equipment were previously removed in preparation for its Thursday, March 21st sail underneath the Walt Whitman Bridge on its way to the Philadelphia Navy Yard.
Why the Navy Yard? Battleship NJ needs a slip roughly the size of two football fields to accommodate repairs, according to inquirer.com.
Where to Watch Battleship New Jersey's Journey from Camden to Philly
On Thursday, tugboats will reportedly tow the 45,000-ton vessel away from Camden Waterfront two miles down the Delaware River to the Naval Yard in South Philly where it will be dry docked, Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
You can watch the journey online starting at 10 a.m.! Battleship New Jersey will livestream the ship's departure on its social-media pages, including Facebook, Patch.com reports.
There are also several vantage points to watch in person. Try Camden Waterfront, Freedom Pier in Gloucester City, RiverWinds in W. Deptford, or Red Bank Battlefield in National Park. The ship will depart approximately 12:10 p.m.
