Throwback Thursday: 10 Fun Facts About Alanis Morissette’s ‘Jagged Little Pill’
Next year will mark the 20th anniversary (eeck!) of the release of one of the most astounding album debuts in music history: Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette. Here are some fun facts about the collection of songs that defined a generation.
In 1995, a Canadian singer/songwriter was seemingly plucked from obscurity (save for a stint as a child star on Nickelodeon's 'You Can't Do That on Television') by, of all people, Madonna. Madonna signed Alanis Morissette to her blossoming record label Maverick Records, hooked her up with super-producer Glen Ballard (Michael Jackson), and Jagged Little Pill was born.
Fun Facts About JLP:
1.) The album produced six singles: 'You Oughta Know', 'Hand In My Pocket', 'Ironic', 'You Learn', Head Over Feet', 'All I Really Want'.
2.) It has sold more than 34 million copies worldwide.
3.) It was nominated for nine Grammy Awards and won five.
4.) At the time (1996), Alanis was the youngest artist ever to win the Grammy for Album of the year.
5.) In October 2002, Rolling Stone ranked it #31 on its Women In Rock - The 50 Essential Albums list.
6.) All of Morissette's vocals on the album were recorded in one or two takes.
7.) Entertainment Weekly gave the album just a C+ upon its release. Idiots, lol.
8.) Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers plays bass and Dave Navarro plays lead guitar on 'you Oughta Know'.
9.) With three Alternative #1 songs, Alanis boasts the most leaders among women in the chart's 26-year history.
10.) 'You Oughta Know' is rumored to be written about Morissette's ex-lover--Dave Coulier. That's right, Uncle Joey from Full House. Alanis has never confirmed or denied it.
