Report Says Two-Thirds of Restaurant Workers Have Lost Their Jobs
We all know that the restaurant industry has been hit especially hard by the Covid-19 pandemic, but a new report shows just how devastating it has been.
Earlier this week, the National Restaurant Association released the results of the Restaurant Industry Impact Survey. According to the survey, over 8 million restaurant workers have been laid-off or furloughed since the start of the pandemic. That is two-thirds of all restaurant employees.
Here are more of the distressing results of the survey:
- 40 percent of restaurants have closed.
- Estimates say the restaurant and foodservice industry will lose $80 billion in sales by the end of April and $240 billion by the end of the year.
- 61% of restaurant operators say that "existing federal relief won't prevent more restaurant layoffs."
In all, the National Restaurant Association says, "The restaurant industry, more than any other industry in the nation, has suffered the most significant sales & job losses since the Covid-19 outbreak began."
