Officials in Cape May County say a sergeant who is suspended from the Ocean City Police Department has been indicted by a grand jury on numerous charges, including aggravated sexual assault.

Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland says 51-year-old Tyrone Rolls of Marmora was indicted on Tuesday on one count of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, two counts of second-degree official misconduct, one count of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, and one count of third-degree aggravated assault of a domestic violence victim.

Rolls surrendered to authorities back in April following an investigation that revealed he allegedly had a sexual relationship with a juvenile, according to Sutherland.

Shortly after his arrest, The Press of Atlantic City reported that Rolls, who had been a police officer for nearly a quarter of a century, served as a youth mentor and was also the co-owner of a youth sports training business.

According to NJ.com, a complaint stated,

Rolls ... allegedly began the assaults [of a 15-year-old female] in 2016, before the start of the victim’s sophomore year at Ocean City High School. The encounters allegedly occurred at his home and in Rolls’ patrol vehicle while he was both on and off duty ... The two reportedly had a fight ... in which Rolls hit the victim with an open hand and knocked her to the ground...

Rolls was in the news during the summer of 2020 when he made a speech during a Black Lives Matter protest in Ocean City:

WPVI-TV reported then,

Rolls became a decorated man both in and out of uniform. He has received several community service awards from The Knights of Columbus, Macedonia United Methodist Church, and [recognition] from NJ Congressman Jeff Van Drew. He holds 'the key to Ocean City,' thanks to an award presented by Mayor Jay Gillian during a celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.

Sutherland says this is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call his office at (609) 465-1135.

The public is reminded that charges are accusations and all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
