Pain at the Pump! South Jersey Sees $4/Gallon Gas

While regular unleaded is still hovering around $3.25/gallon in much of South Jersey, the price of premium fuel is completely different story.

At lease one station in Egg Harbor Township was selling the good stuff (93 octane) for $4.01/gallon Saturday afternoon.

So why are gas prices high and going higher even after the state cut the gas tax on October 1st?

Tracy Noble, manager of public and government affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic, said the probable causes for the increase are a slight uptick in demand and the high price of crude oil.

"Gas prices throughout New Jersey remain at the highest levels of 2021, despite the recent decrease in the gas tax and seasonal shift to winter-blend fuels," Noble said. "We never see prices decrease as fast as they increase but the fact that they are increasing even with the recent gas tax decrease is certainly an anomaly."

This time last year, regular unleaded was averaging $2.23/gallon and premium was $2.79 across the Garden State, according to AAA.

And should you find yourself in parts of North Jersey soon, gasbuddy.com reports you can still find gas for just under $3/gallon and a small handful of stations.
