A spectacular fire at the Mays Landing Bulkhead late Saturday night led to the arrest of a Mays Landing man on arson charges.

Township of Hamilton Police say they discovered a boat fire just before midnight Saturday.

While patrolling the area of River Rd Sgt. Guerrier came upon a vessel on fire that was moored at the bulkhead.  He and Ofc. Jacobi passed information gathered at the scene to surrounding units.  A short time later Sgt. Muller and Ofc. Clayton located a vehicle matching the description of the one leaving the scene.  Positive ID was made and the suspects were detained for further investigation.  Det. Robison and Sgt. Brown of the NJSP Marine Services Bureau interviewed the suspects further.  Ultimately William Ford age 21 of Mays Landing was charged with 3rd Degree Arson and 3rd Degree Criminal Mischief and lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility in lieu of $ 50,000 cash bail.  The fire was extinguished by the Mays Landing Fire Dept.  The damage was contained to the vessel and a small portion of the bulkhead.  River Rd between Farragut Ave and the Sugar Hill Intersection was shut down for approximately 2 hrs.  There were no injuries reported at the scene.
