Lakewood resident Mendel Rosenfeld is petitioning newly appointed Governor Phil Murphy to raise the speed limit of the Garden State Parkway to 75 m.p.h. saying that "NJ is way behind."

As of this writing, the change.org petition has over 700 signatures.

Mendel says on change.org:

by changing the speed limit on the Garden State Parkway and other NJ highways people will agree to travel further for a job which will lower unemployment rate.

There aren't stats to prove that claim, but in comparison to the rest of the country, we are on the slow side when it comes to speed limits. The farther west you go, the higher the speed limit, but often the less traffic.

Opinions on the petition are divided. One commenter says we're speeding anyway, so we might as well make it legal. Another claims that the higher speed limit will cause more accidents.

What do you think?
