Villas, N.J. — A Cape May County man is facing charges following a drug bust Wednesday morning.

Multi-agency Operation Targets Villas Resident

31-year-old Hector L. Melendez of Villas was arrested after the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office, the Drug Enforcement Administration, Homeland Security Investigations, the Lower Township Police Department, and the Cape May County Regional SWAT Team executed search warrants at his home and on his person.

According to officials, they seized over ½-ounce of cocaine, psilocybin mushrooms, paraphernalia associated with the distribution of controlled dangerous substances (CDS), and a large sum of cash.

Charges Filed

Melendez was charged with second-degree distribution of CDS, third-degree possession of cocaine, third-degree money laundering, fourth-degree possession with intent to distribute drug paraphernalia, and a disorderly persons offense of possession of psilocybin mushrooms.

He was processed and lodged at the Cape May County Correctional Facility, where he remains in custody pending court proceedings.

Those convicted of second-degree crimes in New Jersey face five to ten years in state prison.

Officials Highlight Ongoing Efforts

Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland said his office will continue to work hand-in-hand with federal and state partners, along with the local municipalities, to target anyone selling illegal drugs.
