A Cape May man has been charged with allegedly stabbing a man multiple times on Monday evening.

What Police Say Happened in Rio Grande

The Middle Township Police Department said at about 5:11 PM, its officers were dispatched to Route 9 in the area of the Beach House Motel in Rio Grande in response to a reported stabbing.

At the scene, authorities located a 40-year-old male from South River, NJ, who had "sustained significant injuries as the result of an apparent knife assault." The victim was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City for treatment.

According to the department, an investigation found that the victim was standing in front of the Beach House Motel when 35-year-old Daniel Thomas of Cape May arrived. He then allegedly got out, armed with a knife, and stabbed the victim multiple times.

Police: Victim Stabbed Multiple Times, Chased Across Route 9

Officials said the victim attempted to flee, but Thomas allegedly chased him across Route 9 into a nearby parking lot, where the assault continued; Thomas then fled the scene in his vehicle.

Charges Filed

Thomas was eventually taken into custody. He is facing the following charges:

  • First-degree Criminal Attempt (Murder)
  • Second-degree Aggravated Assault
  • Third-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose
  • Fourth-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon
  • Fourth-degree Certain Persons Not to Possess Weapons

Police said they determined that the victim and Thomas knew each other, and the attack was not random. There is no threat to the public.

Thomas was processed and lodged at the Cape May County Correctional Facility pending court proceedings.
