Authorities in one Camden County borough say a police officer was not hurt when his patrol vehicle was hit by an impaired driver early Friday morning.

A preliminary investigation by the Berlin Police Department found that one of their officers was parked in a marked SUV on the side of Jackson Road handling a previous call for service.

The officer was inside of his vehicle when it was struck by another vehicle traveling on Jackson Road towards the White Horse Pike at two minutes after midnight.

Francis R. Welsh II of Lindenwold, NJ, Charged

The driver of the other vehicle, Francis R. Welsh II of Lindenwold, stopped after striking the police SUV and was then arrested and charged with the following:

  • Driving under the influence
  • Refusal to submit to breath testing
  • Unlawful possession of certain weapons
  • Criminal mischief

Welsh II was released pending a court date in Camden County Superior Court.

The public is reminded that charges are accusations and all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
