Motorcyclist critically injured in Ocean County, NJ, crash Sunday afternoon
A motorcyclist is in critical condition following an accident in Ocean County Sunday afternoon.
The Manchester Township Police Department says the crash happened just before 1:15 at County Route 571 and Beacon Street.
Upon arrival, officers say they found 30-year-old Collins Oluleti of Toms River lying in the roadway with a severe head injury. He was unresponsive and flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune for treatment.
Also at the intersection was a 2004 Toyota Camry with front-end damage.
Police Investigation
Police say their investigation determined Oluleti was driving a Kawasaki Vulcan S motorcycle eastbound on Route 571 in the left lane while the Toyota was northbound on Beacon Street, stopped at a stop sign.
The Toyota then proceeded into the intersection and [Oluleti] observed the Toyota entering his lane of travel. At that time, [Oluleti] began to brake to avoid a collision, which caused him to lose control and fall to the pavement. [Oluleti] and the Kawasaki began to slide on the pavement and detach from each other.
Once apart, the motorcycle slid nearly 300 feet while Oluleti slid into the front of the Toyota.
Following the impact, the Toyota reversed approximately 32 feet to the area of the stop bar at the intersection. This caused [Oluleti] to be dragged approximately 11 feet due to him being stuck underneath the Toyota.
The driver of the Toyota, 26-year-old Andy Hernandez-Cheneaux of Toms River, was uninjured. Three other people in that car, 25-year-old Xiomara Lezama-Briceno of Toms River, 24-year-old Geraldine Requena-Carrasco of Manchester, and 28-year-old Juan Lezama-Briceno of Toms River, were also uninjured.
Authorities say Oluleti was wearing an approved DOT helmet, but it fell off while he was sliding on the pavement before he hit the Toyota.
The investigation into this crash is still ongoing, however, failure to yield right of way at an intersection appears to be the primary contributing factor.
