22 Years Later, Absecon Homicide Victim Still Unidentified
22 years ago today, human remains were found along a roadside in Absecon and to this day, the case still remains a mystery.
The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Absecon Police Department are asking for your help as they are still trying to piece-together this cold but unforgotten homicide case.
Remains Found Along Route 30 in 2004
On February 17th, 2004, Absecon Police were called to a marshy area off of Route 30 after New Jersey Department of Corrections personnel, who were conducting a roadside cleanup, discovered human remains inside of a laundry bag.
An autopsy determined the remains belonged to an adult male, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.
Description of the Victim
The victim was estimated to be between 25 and 35 years old at the time of death. He had black hair, a prominent nose, and overlapping front teeth.
Based on the condition of the remains, investigators believe the victim had been dead for at least two months prior to discovery. No clothing or personal items were recovered at the scene.
In 2023, the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office secured funding for advanced DNA testing and results indicated the victim was potentially of South Asian descent, specifically from India and/or Pakistan; however, no additional leads were developed.
Facial Reconstruction and Call for Tips
The New Jersey State Police Office of Forensic Services conducted a clay facial reconstruction in an effort to depict the victim's identifying features.
Despite an extensive investigation, including DNA testing and comparisons with missing persons cases, the victim could not be identified.
Anyone who may have had a missing South Asian relative or acquaintance between mid-to-late 2003 and early 2004, or who recognizes the victim, is urged to contact the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office at (609) 909-7666.
