Our original report continues below.
Two people are dead following a horrific crash on Route 55 in Gloucester County Thursday morning.
WPVI-TV reports the accident happened just before 9:30 on the northbound side of the highway, just past Route 322, in Mantua Township.
Video from 6ABC showed one car with heavy front-end damage on its roof while another vehicle was resting on its side on the shoulder of the road. Both drivers were reportedly killed; their identities have not yet been released.
The station reported that authorities are looking into whether or not one of the drivers was going the wrong way.
Shortly after the accident, the Gloucester County Office of Emergency Management reported northbound Route 55 was closed between Exit 48 for Ellis Street/Ferrell-Glassboro and Exit 53/Woodbury-Glassboro Road in Mantua Township.
Northbound traffic was being allowed to pass on the southbound lanes of Route 55, causing massive delays in both directions.
Authorities said the roadway would likely be closed for four to six hours, which could be the beginning of the evening rush hour.
Officials are advising anyone that would normally use Route 55 in Gloucester County to seek another route.
This is a developing story that will be updated when more information becomes available.
