High School sports is more than just games played on a field or court, the results of these games have meaning to the local community. People identify with the local team, not just because their kids are students there, but also because they or someone they know graduated from those schools.

In South Jersey, High School Basketball is part of the fabric of the local community. The Head Basketball Coaches are beloved people who the players respect and the parents appreciate. This is not just about wins and losses, but the tradition at many High Schools in New Jersey's southernmost counties for basketball has a deep history.

From Gene Allen at Atlantic City High School to John Leahy at Middle Township, Paul Rodio at St. Augustine Prep to Steve DiPatri at Wildwood Catholic, there are so many basketball coaches around South Jersey who have been part of the fabric of the communities their schools are a part of.

Ocean City High School Boys Basketball Coach John Bruno has been coaching for 37 years and teaching for 42 years, but his Boys team did something special this weekend.

The OCHS Boys team won the 2026 New Jersey State Group 3 Championship on Sunday, becoming the first Ocean City Boys team to win a state title since 1964. They are also the first High School Boys Basketball team from Cape May County to win a NJ State title was Middle Township High School in 2002.

"It means the world (to the community), it's amazing what success (by) a local high school team can do for the community." Head Coach John Bruno told 973 ESPN South Jersey on Monday. "The amount of people who have expressed their congratulations, the number of people with at the (championship) game, the people that constantly are telling the kids (congratulations),it's just amazing what it can do for your community as a whole."

This Ocean City HS Boys Basketball team had to overcome in their journey to a state championship. Coach Bruno spoke about how his team rebounded from losing the Cape Atlantic League Final to make a deep NJSIAA Playoff run:

"When that game was over, (and) it was a tough loss against Atlantic City, we said, 'Okay, what's the next game?' And then we knew at that point (what) we were working towards....The experience of being (in the NJSIAA Playoffs) last year I think was huge for the kids, they were prepared for how intense it was going to be, and they were actually more relaxed this year than they were even last year.

"That played a lot into the composure of the team. And the fact that we made it to the South Jersey finals, we were able to win a South Jersey title last year....But I just thought they realized it gave them the confidence that if they did things the way that they were capable, they could be successful. And so going through that experience last year, it really is that mentality says why not us?"

Serving as Head Boys Basketball Coach at Ocean City High School for almost forty years, John Bruno has seen many players and teams come through the gymnasium. From the old High School to the new building that opened 20 years ago, Coach Bruno understands how special this championship is for everyone involved:

"What has made this (team) really special is these kids are best friends, and that to me, in this day and age of new kids coming and leaving schools and transferring here and there, these kids have been playing together since sixth grade. So, this is something that they're going to be able to take (with them forever), and they're probably going to stay friends until they have children, and they'll tell stories to their children (about) what this experience was for them....That's going to be something that they will always have (as memories) that they will love, and last for them forever."

Just because Coach Bruno's basketball season is done, doesn't mean his work is done. He is still a teacher, Ocean City High School is the host gym for the Prime Events All-Star Saturday, and the schools season isn't over until June. But for anyone who watch the live stream of the game on Sunday, we all saw how special this was for everyone involved with Ocean City High School Sports.
