New Surveillance Cameras Installed On Five South Jersey Bridges

The addition of Video Surveillance Cameras is becoming a popular addition to the Jersey Shore. Many towns like Sea Isle City are adding them to key areas to help Police Departments better serve and protect the community.

But there is a new area to receive these cameras ahead of the 2024 Summer Season. The Cape May County Bridge Commission has installed Surveillance Cameras on five bridges along the popular Ocean Drive Highway.

Also known as County Route 619, Ocean Drive is the main connection between the five islands that comprise the Cape May County Coastline. The purpose of the new Surveillance Cameras is to monitor both automotive traffic on the bridges along with the boat traffic that travels under the bridges.

This new Video Surveillance is completely separate from the EZ-Pass Cameras that monitor Toll Booths. The EZ-Pass cameras that monitor for toll violations are on a different system than these new Video Surveillance Cameras.

The Surveillance Video from each bridge will be available to Police Departments for issues such as Amber Alerts and Investigations conducted by the individual communities along with the State Police.

Since they were built about 80 years ago, these five bridges have connected the Shore Towns allowing motorists to travel directly to each Coastal Community without driving to the mainland:

*Middle Thorofare Bridge is the connection between the entrance to Cape May and the southern end of Wildwood Crest
*Grassy Sound Bridge is one of the two bridges that links North Wildwood on Ocean Drive to Stone Harbor
*Great Channel Bridge enters Stone Harbor at the southern end of the island and is the second bridge on Ocean Drive on the way to North Wildwood
*Townsend's Inlet Bridge is the connection between the northern end of Avalon to the south end of Sea Isle City.
*Corsons Inlet Bridge is the link between Strathmere and the south end of Ocean City

All five of these bridges have had Construction Work done on them in recent months which included the temporary closing of Stone Harbor's Great Channel Bridge.  The new Surveillance Cameras are the latest upgrades for the old bridges that are vital to the Ocean Drive Highway.
