New Jersey Guys Dream Project Finally To Debut On Streaming
What was once the dream of a student who graduated from Cape May County Technical High School has now become a Feature Film that will be debuting on Amazon Prime, iTunes, and Video On Demand. Over 20 years after the first draft of the screenplay was written, this Ganster-style thriller movie that was Produced and Filmed in New Jersey has finally become a reality.
The film is titled The Bastard Sons, starring Kevin Interdonato (from The Sopranos and City On A Hill) along with New Jersey celebrities Roger Matthews (Jersey Shore) and Frankie Edgar (former UFC Lightweight Champion). This movie is the creation of a long-time New Jersey resident from Cape May County, Glenn Rodriguez.
When I first met Glenn in High School, he always believed that he was destined to make movies. Now 20 plus years after we first met at Cape May County Technical High School, the movie inspired by Glenn watching Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs has finally come to life thanks to his relationship with Kevin Interdonato:
"A few years after Graduating from High School, I had just moved back home to Cape May County from Florida and wanted to start taking my goals of being a filmmaker seriously. I took what I had in that original draft and wrote a little more, and then I held auditions in Marmora. That’s where I met Kevin Interdonato, who, at the time, was in a few shorts and TV shows, including The Sopranos. He knocked the audition out of the park (and) I instantly gave him the lead role....He gave me the confidence to turn what I had, which was a 25-page screenplay, into a full-length screenplay. The problem was that I had no money at the time."
Glenn and Kevin stayed in touch over the years, which led them to work together on the film Dirty Dead Con Men (2018). After working and living in Los Angeles for years, both New Jersey guys decided to move out of Hollywood and back to the East Coast.
But the dream of that Teenager in Cape May County was not dead yet, it just needed to be rehabilitated. That connection that Rodriguez had with Interdonato came full circle almost 15 years after their first meeting:
"After COVID hit (in 2020), Kevin called me up out of the blue and said he found the original screenplay he used to audition with and wanted to take a crack at a new draft. - So we spent a few months working on writing what would become The Bastard Sons. The characters and the story got a much-needed facelift and injection of some new ideas while keeping much of the original plot intact. Kevin’s experience in the business up to that point and all my growth as a writer helped get that story where it needed to be."
Glenn Rodriguez wanted the movie to be filmed in Cape May County because that was his original vision for the project, but Kevin Interdonato (Director and Co-Writer) had better access to places up north like Asbury Park. But for Rodriguez, The Bastard Sons still maintains the New Jersey vibes he always wanted:
"It was really important (to me) to shoot (the movie) in New Jersey. I’ve lived up and down the state in my life, and this story couldn’t take place anywhere else. As far as actors go, a lot of them are from Jersey. Our lead, co-writer, and director, Kevin Interdonato, is a Jersey native; UFC legend Frankie Edgar and Jersey Shore alum Roger Mathews are both Jersey guys as well. (The Bastard Sons) is as Jersey as it gets. My next project will be shot in Cape May County (but) that's a story for another day."
With the movie making its debut on Amazon Prime, iTunes, and Video On-Demand starting on January 5th, The Bastard Sons follows the trend of many films in the post-COVID world that are utilizing streaming services. Instead of relying on movie theaters for distribution, the smaller studios and production companies are making deals with streaming services like Amazon Prime, Netflix, and Apple TV+. Movies starring Ryan Reynolds, Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Jennifer Lopez have all not been released in theaters before debuting on streaming services.
For Glenn Rodriguez, The Bastard Sons is over 20 years in the making. This Gangster/Crime movie comes with wild twists to keep you on edge for the whole ride. But for the movie's creator, it signifies much more than just the latest movie to debut on Amazon Prime:
"The Bastard Sons was my first true creation; It's my baby, and seeing what my baby has been through all these years, it’s just crazy that we are here. Producing this has been a labor of love. - Life is going to throw a lot of curveballs at you and are going to go through some hard times. Sometimes, those hard times can be self-inflicted, but for me, I never took my eye off the prize. Even with the doubters and the hurdles, I kept swimming. Filmmaking has been that guiding light for me and it finally paid off."
