You Wont Believe How Few South Jersey Teachers Make the New Jersey Median Salary
For the 2024-25 school year, the median salary for New Jersey teachers was 6.21 percent higher than it was just a couple of years ago. At $82,780, NJ Teachers have the seventh highest median income among the 50 United States.
Even though this annual salary number looks appealing to many people, the reality is that this is actually not what many New Jersey teachers actually earn each school year. Since 2024, over 90 South Jersey schools have seen their state funding cut, while former NJ Governor Phil Murphy claimed the state was "fully funding" state education in the billions.
The reality is that many South Jersey teachers are underpaid compared to their North Jersey contemporaries
New Jersey Teacher Salaries across the state increased by 3.2 percent for the 2024-25 school year, according to recent data. But there are over 120 school districts whose teachers are making less than the NJ Median Teacher Salary.
Many of those school districts that lost state funding are simultaneously on the list of schools with teachers whose paychecks are less than the state teachers' median incomes. Some of those schools on both lists include:
*Upper Township School District ($70,921)
*Dennis Township Schools:($60,670)
*Stow Creek Township ($67,938)
*City of Cape May ($62,935)
*Greenwich Township ($64,878)
*Middle Township ($67,716)
*Estell Manor ($69,914)
There are 122 School Districts in South Jersey where the median teacher salaries are less than $82,780 annually. For example, all school districts in Cape May County have a cumulative average Teachers' Salary of $73,562, almost $10,000 less than the statewide median income.
From Cape May to Atlantic Counties, Salem to Gloucester, Cumberland to Camden, plus Ocean Counties have 77 percent of their teachers making less per school year than the state average annual income.
Only 22 percent of South Jersey Public School Districts have teachers whose median salaries are on par with the state median income for teachers:
