What is Roku

Services like Roku, Amazon Firestick, Chromecast, and others, offer subscribers the opportunity to choose better the channels they want to watch, without paying for channels they don't need or want.

Aside from internet service, these services eliminate the need for the cable company.

It's not expensive to buy one of these services, and most of them offer similar options.  The biggest differences between the services seem to be in how they look and function.

Once you commit to one of these services, you get used to things, and most feel uncomfortable switching to a new service.

When a service like Roku makes a significant change, and you don't like it, you can feel trapped.

Why Are Roku Subscribers Upset

That's exactly what's happened recently, as Roku sent out their new terms of service.  Subscribers were given the option of agreeing to the changes or giving up using Roku.

At issue is a change in the Dispute Resolution Terms.  These terms are common in most of the services we use, whether we read them or not.

In the case of Roku, by agreeing to the terms subscribers agree to go through arbitration rather than a court of law to settle disputes.

What is different about this situation, is that subscribers who do not agree to the terms, will not be able to use the service.

How to Opt-Out of New Roku Terms of Service

There is a way around this situation.  The company says that subscribers can send a letter to an address they have posted on their site.  This must be done within 30 days of being notified.

Most agree that this is something that will never impact most subscribers.  The big question yet to be answered is why the company has come out with this now, and why in such a heavy-handed way.
