Popcorn Park Animal Refuge Mourns Death of Beloved Tiger

Eli, one of two endangered tigers who have been residents at Lacey Township's Popcorn Park Animal Refuge for 8 years has died.

Popcorn Park's Tiger Eli Dies

Popcorn Park Animal Refuge in Forked River announced on Facebook Wednesday that Eli the tiger had died after health complications. Eli came to Popcorn Park in 2016 with his sister Jess and had been a favorite attraction at the animal refuge over the years.

Eli the Tiger's Health Had Declined

Popcorn Park posted that the death of Eli had come despite the best efforts of dedicated veterinarians, who noticed a decline in his health in recent weeks, leading to decreased mobility and discomfort.

"After exhausting all options and considering his quality of life, we made the difficult decision to say good bye to Eli."

 

Eli Had Helped Raise Awareness About Endangered Tigers

The staff at Popcorn Park pointed out what a valuable resource Eli had been in his time at the animal refuge, raising awareness and love about endangered tigers.

Just over a century ago, 100,000 wild tigers roamed the planet. Today, fewer than 3,900 remain. According to the WWF, much of this decline has occurred in the past decade.

Eli's Time at Popcorn Park Remembered

The Popcorn Park staff is remembering what they call Eli's "gentle nature". They say his days were filled with the simple pleasures of sunbathing, wading in the pond, and playing with his sister Jess.

Popcorn Park resolves to continue Eli's legacy through their commitment to care for all the animals under their care.

Popcorn Park Refuge, 1 Humane Way, Forked River, is now home to over 200 animals and birds.
