Multiple South Jersey fire and rescue units responded to a three-alarm house fire in Dennis Township on Wednesday morning.

At about 8:23 am Wednesday, Dennis Township fire units were called to the scene of a house fire in the 400 block of Petersburg Road. They were assisted by fire crews from Ocean View, Belleplain, Stone Harbor Fire, and Avalon.

When first responders arrived at the location, they reported a working fire in a 2.5-story home with an attached garage and requested a 2nd alarm.

All of the home occupants and pets had already left the home and were safe, according to a release from firefighters.

The fire quickly increased to a 2-alarm and then a 3-alarm blaze and additional help arrived from  Woodbine, Seaville, Tuckahoe, Marmora, Cape May Court House, Goshen, Rio Grande, Sea Isle City, Heislerville, Leesburg, Green Creek, Inspira EMS, Upper Twp EMS, and the Middle Township Ambulance Corps.

Crews worked for about 40 minutes to get the fire under control but stayed on the scene for several hours dousing hot spots and helping investigators from the Cape May County Fire Marshal's Office. The American Red Cross and Atlantic City Electric also responded to the scene.

In all, fire and rescue personnel from 19 South Jersey fire companies assisted in controlling the situation.

Two firefighters were injured on the scene, with one being transported to the hospital, where he was treated and released. The second firefighter was treated on the scene.

The fire remains under investigation by the Cape May County Fire Marshal's Office and the NJ State Police in Woodbine.
