Apple cider donuts did not begin here in New Jersey, but a bit north of here. Apple cider donuts started in New England, where apple orchards were a big part of farm life. Farmers made cider in the fall, and bakers began adding it to donut batter for extra flavor, along with warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. This gave the donuts a tangy, cozy taste that fit the season perfectly.

Additionally, by the mid-1900s, orchards began selling them as a special treat during apple-picking season, and they quickly became a fall tradition. Today, apple cider donuts are enjoyed all over the U.S., especially at orchards and autumn festivals.
