Romance Scams Are Spiking Before Valentine’s Day, Here’s What the FBI Wants NJ Residents to Know
As Valentine’s Day approaches, the FBI is sending a serious warning to people across New Jersey: romance scams are on the rise, and scammers are getting more sophisticated than ever.

Holidays that revolve around love and connection can also bring feelings of loneliness for some. According to federal investigators, criminals know this, and they use it to their advantage.
FBI field offices across the country, including those serving New Jersey, are urging residents to be especially cautious with new online relationships that seem to move quickly from friendly conversation to emotional intimacy and, eventually, financial requests.
What Is a Romance Scam?
A romance scam happens when someone creates a fake identity online and pretends to form a romantic relationship with a victim. Over time, they build trust, affection, and emotional dependence. Once that connection is established, the requests begin, according to newsweek.com.
Why Scams Increase Around Valentine’s Day
The FBI notes that people can feel more vulnerable around holidays centered on relationships. Scammers exploit this by increasing their activity on dating apps, social media platforms, and messaging sites during this time of year.
The FBI urges people to trust their instincts. If something feels off, it probably is.
