A three-year old girl is dead after falling in a septic tank at a Cape May County campground Saturday evening.

Lower Township Police Department say they responded to a call for medical assistance at Sun Outdoors Campground, in the 600 block of Route 9 in Erma.

When police arrived they found the girl had apparently fallen accidently in to the sewage septic tank and had been pulled out unresponsive.

The girl was immediately transported to Cape Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead later that evening. The child's name has not been released.

In a new release about the girl's death, Lower Township Police say that detectives from the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office and the Lower Township Police Department responded to the scene and immediately initiated an investigation into this child’s death.

Early Sunday morning, the Southern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy on the girl and the cause and manner of death are pending the final autopsy report.

Police said there were no signs of foul play as of Sunday afternoon, and that the incident appears to be an accident.

According to the campgrounds website, Sun Outdoors is a seasonal all-ages resort that is available for RV or tent and cabin rental beginning April 1, which means this was their first weekend open for the season.

Sun Outdoors rental information says they are a family resort with a maximum reservation limit of 6 people including children.

No one answered a call to the Sun Outdoors campground Sunday afternoon.
