Atlantic County saw its first report of the West Nile Virus confirmed for this year. According to the Press of Atlantic City, a mosquito in Northfield has tested positive for the virus.
Mosquitoes have a tendency to test positive for the virus in the summer and fall after significant rainfall. So far this year, there have been no reports of any human contracting the virus according to the report.
The sample that tested positive for WNV was taken form the 1200 block of Zion Road in Norhtfield.
The Department of Mosquito Control have regular tests for the virus throughout both Atlantic and Cape May counties and sprays for mosquitoes in affected areas.
You should use insect repellent when going outdoors to cut down the risk of being bitten. Also look for where water can accumulate around the outside of your house like buckets, bird baths and empty containers.
