Is ‘Despacito’ About to Break Mariah Carey’s 21-Year-Old Billboard Record?
"Despacito" is officially the most-viewed YouTube music video of all time — is it about to claim a radio record as well (and destroy the Lambily in the process)?
The Luis Fonsi track, which features Daddy Yankee, has just tied the record for most consecutive weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100, according to Billboard. The distinction previously belonged to Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men, alone, whose "One Sweet Day" spent 16 weeks reigning over the chart between 1995 and 1996. "Despacito," the remix of which features Justin Bieber, is now one single week away from snatching the honor.
Funnily enough, Mariah stans are hoping Taylor Swift's "Look What You Made Me Do," freshly released to Billboard charts, will be enough to hold of Fonsi from claiming Mariah's title.
The same week that "Despacito" ties Mimi's record, Ed Sheeran has officially broken the record for most consecutive weeks spent in the Top 10. "Shape of You," which dropped way back in January, has now been hovering toward the top of the chart for 33 weeks.
